Hi, thanks for visiting Movers.com! Your predicament is a fairly common one, but nonetheless one that presents a lot of challenges. Pianos are heavy and cumbersome items to move, even if you have multiple people assisting you, and sometimes you need professionals who are well-practiced in the art of moving such large, difficult items.

Hiring moving labor

Any local moving company will be able to assist you in moving the piano, and since you'll only be moving the furniture from one spot to another on the same floor and will not require a truck, you'll only need moving labor. The whole process should only take an hour or two and you'll pay the movers by the hour. Typically, most local moving companies will charge you between $80-$120 per hour for moving labor.

Of course, if you choose to hire a moving company to assist you, they'll bring along all of the necessary items and moving supplies, such as blankets, shrink wrap and dollies. These items will be essential to moving your piano and sofa, and they will play a big role in the move. Without them, you can risk damaging your items, or even your home. Blankets and wrap will protect both your piano and sofa, and it will also protect your walls and floors during the move, especially if you have hardwood flooring, which can be easily damaged by moving an item as big and heavy as a piano.

Preparing your piano for the move

If your piano is very expensive, you may also want to consider purchasing some moving insurance for it for the day you are planning on moving it, that way it is covered in the event that something happens to it during the move.

Preparing your piano for the move is also an important part of the process, and you want to make sure that you've wrapped it properly to avoid the piano being damaged during the move. Moving Tips & Guides
Moving Company Policies
Every moving company has different policies regarding different facets of the move that can range from how they go about the packing and loading process to how they conduct the move and how they give estimates, so it can’t hurt to familiarize yourself with the most common ones so you can be prepared for your move.
Planning a Long Distance Move
A long distance move is defined by any move that takes you more than 50-100 miles from your old home. With a definition that is this broad, it can be used to describe a move that takes you all the way to the other side of the country, or a move that takes you to the other side of the state. But the one thing that all long distance moves have in common is that they require careful planning, and a lot of it.
Ask About Extra Costs
Don’t be afraid to ask the moving company questions about extra fees that may come up. If you haven’t used adequate materials in packing your belongings, you can be charged for packing supplies. There may be extra fees for moving from a big city. They may charge you extra for any number of reasons, so it’s important to make sure that you have an idea of everything that they want to charge you either up front or just make sure that you’re clear on why they’re charging you extra.
