Even after you and your belongings have arrived at your new home, the moving process is far from over. You will still have to spend hours unpacking boxes, decorating, and getting adjusted to life in a new town. While getting settled into your home can be overwhelming, following these suggestions can help you take care of all the necessities.
Ensuring the safety of your family and home against fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, and break-ins should be your main priority. First, replace the batteries in the smoke detectors and make sure they work properly. Also, investigate the floor plan of your house and devise an emergency escape plan. Purchase some carbon monoxide detectors if they are not already installed in the house.
To protect your home from break-ins, use the following tips:
- Always lock the doors and windows, even if you will only be away for a short time.
- Avoid placing valuable items in front of a window, as they can be seen from the road and possibly entice burglars.
- To prevent intruders from forcing a sliding door open, place a metal rod or a piece of wood in the tracking of the door.
- Make sure you lock the door of your attached garage.
- If the outside lighting system is not sufficient, add some more lights or install stronger bulbs.
- Keep the bushes near the entrance of your home neat and trimmed to prevent potential burglars from hiding in tall, bushy foliage.
- Find out if your neighborhood has a community watch program and how you can become involved.
- Have an alarm system installed. In addition to preventing crime, an alarm system can give you peace of mind when you leave your home.
Once the proper safety precautions are in place, you will want to make sure your house is clean before you begin unpacking. We recommend that you start with the kitchen. Unload all glassware and silverware and make sure that your appliances are positioned to your liking and in working order. You should then work on the bathroom by unloading toiletries and medicines. Next, start unloading the bedrooms. Though you don’t have to unpack everything, at least assemble the beds and unpack some clothes for the next few days.
You should change your mailing address as soon as possible, and remember to have mail sent to your old house forwarded to your new home. Make sure you know where to find the nearest post office as well as local banks, hospitals, police stations, fire stations, cleaners, and gas stations. Furthermore, find out the necessary information regarding sanitation: the location of recycling facilities and the days and times of garbage collection.
Additionally, you will need to find a doctor and a dentist in your new location and provide them with your medical history. You should also contact insurance agents for transferring your insurance policies.
If you are moving to a new state, you will need to obtain a new drivers license. Moreover, find out how to register as a voter in your new town.
