Apartment Hunting Tips for Students   Email      Print
As a college student, you probably have plenty of things to worry about, like keeping up with your studies and making sure you have enough money to get by. Unfortunately, finding a place to live is another potential headache.

There are many factors to consider when looking for an apartment, such as location, lease terms, amenities, and affordability. Although finding a new place may be exhausting, these apartment hunting tips can make the process easier.
Start your search early
To ensure that you successfully find an apartment close to campus, you should begin your search months in advance. Use any of the following methods to help you find an apartment:
  • Contact the student housing office or go to their web site to learn about university-owned housing options.
  • Look at postings on bulletin boards around campus.
  • Explore the surrounding neighborhoods for “For Rent” signs.
  • Search for apartment listings online or in local newspapers.
  • Avoid using real estate agents or apartment locators, as they charge high costs for their services.
Know what you are looking for and what you can afford:
You should plan your budget to determine how much you will be able to spend on rent and utilities. Then decide which amenities you would like, such as air conditioning, a dishwasher, or a washer and dryer. Keep in mind that you may need to pay the first and last months’ rent in addition to your security deposit. Living with roommates is a good way to reduce expenses and enjoy the social aspects of student life.
Transit and Transportation:
Try to find an apartment that is within walking distance of campus and close to public transportation, if necessary. If you have a car, make sure you know where you can park it before you arrive.
Comfort and safety:
Choose an apartment that is safe, comfortable, and located in a quiet area. You should also ensure that security measures, like locks or an alarm system, are in place.
Inspect the apartment carefully:
Before signing any lease, thoroughly look over the apartment. Make sure that all included appliances and plumbing fixtures are clean and in working order. Check for leakages or damages in the areas surrounding sinks and toilets. If you can, talk to current or former residents of the apartment complex regarding maintenance and other services.
Before you sign:
Read the lease agreement carefully before signing. Of course, you can always ask your parents for help understanding the lease. Don’t forget to ask the landlord about the policy for repairs and to get this in writing. Once all the details are settled, you can sign the lease. Once all of the papers are signed and your belongings are moved in, you can enjoy the freedom and responsibilities that independent apartment living bring.
