Saying good-bye to treasured loved ones is never easy. However, it is an unavoidable reality that people's lives take them in different directions, whether it be for school, employment opportunity or personal reasons. You may not want to bid farewell to your life-long best pal when she gets a job offer across country, or say adieu to your beloved neighbors that always get your mail for you when you're on vacation and don't mind when your son's ball flies over the fence into their yard. Though it is difficult to say good-bye to those that have made an impact on our lives, the best way to remind them how much they are loved and will be missed is with a farewell bash. This guide will give you some ideas on how to throw an unforgettable going-away party for your friend, co-worker, neighbor or relative that is leaving town.

Decorate and dine with a theme.

Depending on where your guest of honor is headed, you can base the theme of the party on their destination. Moving to New Orleans? Host a party with a Mardi Gras theme, decorating the walls with feathered masks and handing out colorful beads to guests. You can use their new location to inspire the menu of the party as well. For a New Orleans party, serve Creole fare like crawfish etouffee, shrimp gumbo and fried oysters. Of course, authentic regional cuisine might be a challenge if you are not a skilled chef, in which case a phone call to the appropriate restaurant for catering might be a wise idea.

Give out favor baskets.

As much as you will miss your GoH, they are going to miss their hometown as well. Make favor baskets with staple products from your city that your friend or loved one adores. Include food items that your area is famous for that they won't have access to in their new town. Moving from New Jersey to California? A bag of bagels is a must. Visit local bakeries for trademark treats. Include silly souvenirs bearing the name of your city or a nearby tourist area, like shot glasses or key chains.

Make a memory video.

Create a short movie on your computer with a simple editing software to screen at your party. Include a montage of photos and video clips of your GoH making memories in their hometown, and set it to some of their favorite tunes. Watching this will certainly get a laugh and a tear out of everyone at your gala.

Give the gift of boxes.

In lieu of your guests bringing presents that will only add to the amount of stuff your GoH already has to haul out of town, have them each bring a moving box or other moving materials. This will be greatly appreciated as not only a generous gesture, but a great help in the moving process.

Have a good-bye book.

Have a guest-book available at the party for attendees to sign. They can share sentimental messages, funny memories, or encouraging quotes. Have each guest take a Polaroid photo with the GoH and insert it into the book with their message for an even more personal touch.

Have a roast and toast.

Gather your guests and have everyone share a story or memory about your GoH, be it sweet and sentimental or uproariously funny and embarrassing. The amusing anecdotes will keep your party's tone from growing somber, as guests bid their tearful good-byes. Sharing laughs and fond memories is the perfect way to break up your party and have everyone leaving feeling satisfied-especially your GoH, who will undoubtedly be grateful for such a thoughtful and memorable send-off.
