Moving Guides    After Your Move    Meeting the New Neighbors

No matter where you live, you will have to deal with neighbors. They can be your best friends, let you borrow things, and help you in times of need. Unfortunately, some people have conflicts with their neighbors, which can make for an unpleasant living experience.

Whether you love your neighbors or hate them, you will have to learn to live with them.

First impressions

As soon as you move into your new home, try to introduce yourself to your new neighbors. By speaking with them, you can learn a lot of information about your new town. You may want to invite your neighbors to a housewarming party so you can all get to know each other better.

Being a good neighbor

To be a good neighbor, you need to understand the living style of your neighborhood and adapt as best you can. You should be courteous and avoid making excessive noise, especially at night. It is also a good idea to inform your neighbors if you have any plans to renovate your home or have a party. This way, they will know in advance if there will be a lot of noise coming from your house.

Dealing with bad neighbors

If your neighbors are loud, annoying, or disrespectful, you should first try approaching them in a friendly manner and let them know what the problem is. More often than not, your neighbor might not be aware that they are doing something that bothers you in the first place. The best case scenario is that your neighbor will apologize and offer to fix the problem.

If you are still having trouble with a neighbor, talk to other neighbors to see if they are bothered as well. Working together, you can try to find a solution to your problems with the neighbor. If the situation persists or escalates, you may need to get the police involved or take your neighbor to court.

Pet peeves

If you have a pet, there are several things you can do to ensure your animals don’t upset your neighbors. Do not let your dogs run around loose, and make sure you clean up after them. If you have a neighbor who does not follow these simple rules, see the section above.

Good neighbors make good neighborhoods

Whether you live in a suburban neighborhood or an apartment block, you should try your best to be a good, quiet, and respectful neighbor. At the same time, you should expect your neighbors to have these qualities too. Addressing any issues in the appropriate manner can help you and your neighbors live together peacefully.
