| When undergoing a move, things can get pretty chaotic, especially at the origin (in other words, your home). With so much going on, it is important that you keep a cool head from the start of your moving day. By properly overseeing the activities of your professional movers or amateur helpers, you can ensure the move gets off to a good start. Make a Schedule |
The best way to manage the activities at your old home is to create a schedule. This schedule should include a time frame for everything that needs to get done, such as:- Cleaning the home
- Having all of the boxes near the door and ready to be picked up
- Loading the moving truck

Kids and Pets Once you have a general idea of how the day's events will be scheduled, you can start focusing on some of the more minor details. For instance, you'll want to make sure that any young children and pets are properly cared for during the moving process. Arrange for a sitter to watch children that are too young to help out with the move. A pet sitter can be hired to keep your dog or cat occupied and away from the activities involved with the move-out.
Double-Check Your Boxes No matter how far in advance you packed your boxes, you should check them to make sure they are packed properly and have enough padding. You'll also want to make sure that the boxes are properly labeled with your name, address, and the room in your new home where each box should go.Protect Your Home The next thing to focus on is protecting your old home from potential damage during the moving-out process. You can protect your home by taking the following measures:- Place plastic protectors on your doorways and any corners, which will protect your walls from getting nicked as your goods are carried out of your home.
- Prevent you floors and carpets from getting dirty by laying out some runners throughout the home for the movers to walk on.
- Should it rain on your moving day, make sure you have a mat or rug so your movers can wipe their feet as they go in and out. Some extra towels will also come in handy so everyone can dry off after going out in the rain.
The Loading Process If you hired professional movers, then you won't need to worry too much about the loading process. If you and your friends or family members are doing the move though, you'll want to make sure the truck is loaded properly.
First, remember to have everyone lift with the knees instead of the back. When loading the truck, the heaviest items should be loaded in first. Also, keep in mind that the truck should be balanced, with objects of similar weights placed on opposite sides.
After everything is loaded, you should give the home a final walkthrough. While this can certainly be done for sentimental reasons, it will also help you to make sure you haven't left anything behind. But, as long as you plan in advance and oversee the activities at the origin well, this hopefully won't be the case. | |
