Alabama is the 30th Largest among the United States, spanning an area of 50,750 sq mi and water area of 1673 sq mi. It acquired statehood on December 14,1819. Alabama is the 22nd state of the 50 United States of America. The name was derived from two Choctaw words roughly meaning vegetation (alba) and gatherer (amo), used to describe the Alabama, or Alibamon, people. Alabama is nicknamed the Yellowhammer State. During the Civil War a company of Alabama soldiers decked their uniforms with yellow trimmings that resembled the wing patches of the yellowhammer, the state bird.

History of Alabama
In 1817, Congress organized the Alabama Territory with Tombigbee River as the capital. On Dec. 14, 1819, Alabama became the 22nd state. The state capital changed several times and in 1846, Montgomery became the permanent state capital of Alabama. During the 1950s and 1960s, the South experienced serious racial problems. Segregation kept whites and blacks separate in schools, restaurants, transportation and parks. Martin Luther King Jr., led a boycott of busses in Montgomery.

A crimson St. Andrew's cross on a white field, patterned after the Confederate Battle Flag, and adopted in 1895. The bars forming the cross must not be less than six inches broad and must extend diagonally across the flag from side to side. Flag adopted 1895.
