Kansas is the 15
th Largest among the United States, spanning an area of 81,823 sq mi and water area of 459 sq mi. It acquired statehood on January 29, 1861. Kansas is the 34
th state of the 50 United States of America. The state is named for the Kansas River, which, in turn, was named for the Kansa people, who once inhabited the northeast area of the state. Kansas is nicknamed The Sunflower State. The helianthus, or native wild sunflower, grows throughout Kansas.

History of Kansas
On January 29, 1861, Kansas became the 24
th state in the union. Oil discovered near Neodesha created an economic boom for Kansas. By 1915, Kansas became a leading mining state. World War II started in 1941. Aircrafts for the war were made in Wichita. General Dwight D. Eisenhower from Abilene, led soldiers into Europe, and helped the U.S. to win the war. He later served as the President of the United States from 1953 to 1961. In 1986, Kansas approved an increase in tax revenue to help the growing demand of water and weaknesses in the economy. A state lottery was also created.
On a navy blue field is a sunflower, the state flower. Also, the state seal and the words "Kansas". In the picture of the state seal are thirty-four stars representing the order of statehood. Above the stars is the motto "To the Stars Through Difficulties". On the seal a sunrise overshadows a farmer plowing a field near his log cabin, a steamboat sailing the Kansas River, a wagontrain heading west and Native Americans hunting bison. Flag adopted 1927.
