st Largest among the United States, spanning an area of 43,566 sq mi and water area of 8,277 sq mi. It acquired statehood on April 30, 1812. Louisiana is the 18
th state of the 50 United States of America. Louisiane was the name given by the 17
th century French explorer René-Robert Cavelier. The Spanish version of the name was Luisiana and the present name evolved from a combination of these. Louisiana is nicknamed The Pelican State. The nickname is after the native coastal bird, the pelican.

History of Louisiana
During the early 1900s, discovery of oil and natural gas brought industrial growth to Louisiana. World War II (1939-1945) helped the economy by bringing new industries to Louisiana. Fuel, oil, and boats were required for the U.S. Navy. Shipbuilding, oil, and gas industries continued to grow during the 1950s. New factories were built and shipping increased greatly at the Port of New Orleans. Gambling was legalized in 1992, and new casinos have provided many Louisianans with jobs. The tourism industry has also increased.
The design of flag consists of the pelican group from the state seal, in white and gold, and a white ribbon bearing the state motto, "Union, Justice, and Confidence", on a field of a solid blue. Flag adopted 1912.
