th Largest among the United States, spanning an area of 30,865 sq mi and water area of 4,523 sq mi. It acquired statehood on March 15, 1820. Maine is the 23
rd state of the 50 United States of America. The name probably originated as the word used by English explorers to refer to the mainland. It may also be derived from the Maine region of France. Maine is nicknamed The Pine Tree State. The nickname is derived from the state tree.

History of Maine
Between 1820 and 1860, Maine’s population grew by 300,000. Fishing, mining and logging industries grew as well. Wood from Maine’s pine forests was used to make ships and many other products. 1846, Maine became the first state to pass a law making alcoholic drinks illegal. Manufacturing and selling alcohol remained illegal in Maine until 1856. During World War II (1939-1945), factories produced uniforms and boots. Shipyards built destroyers and cargo ships. After the war, the state government passed laws helping new industries to come to Maine. Tax rates were reduced and roads were improved.
The state coat of arms is placed on a blue field. In the center of the shield a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represents the work that people did in early times. The North Star represents the state motto:"Dirigo". ("I Direct" ) Flag adopted 1909.
