On March 1, 1867, with a great increase in population, Nebraska became the 37
th state of the union with Lincoln as its capital. Oil was discovered in southeastern Nebraska in 1939. During World War II (1939-1945), Nebraska provided great numbers of wheat, corn, and potatoes for the soldiers. Cattle ranching also increased greatly. Farm income reached a record of $1 billion in 1947. Today, Nebraska still depends heavily on agriculture. Production has increased through use of machinery, but profit is steadily falling.
