New Mexico is the 5
th Largest among the United States, spanning an area of 121,359 sq mi and water area of 234 sq mi. It acquired statehood on January 6, 1912. New Mexico is the 47
th state of the 50 United States of America. The region north of Mexico was named Nuevo Mexico by a Spanish explorer in the 1560s. New Mexico is nicknamed The Land of Enchantment. The state's nickname refers to its natural beauty and numerous recreational opportunities.

History of New Mexico
In 1912, New Mexico became the 47
th state, with Santa Fe as the state capital. During World War II, many Navajo Indians from New Mexico fought in the war. They used the Navajo language in code to send messages the Japanese could not understand. In 1943, scientists developed the atomic bomb in Los Alamos. July 1945, the government exploded the first bomb in the desert near Alamogordo. New Mexico has now become a research center and testing ground for government studies. In Los Alamos, they are studying ways to use nuclear energy. In Albuquerque, they are developing uses for military inventions during times of peace. In White Sands, they test weapons.
The yellow field and red symbol colors are the colors of Spain. First brought to New Mexico by Spanish explorers in 1540. On New Mexico's flag we see a red sun with rays streching out from it. There are four groups of rays with four rays in each group. This is an ancient sun symbol of a Native American people called the Zia. The Zia believed that the giver of all good gave them gifts in groups of four.

- The four seasons - spring, summer, fall and winter.
- The day - sunrise, noon, evening and night.
- Life itself - childhood, youth, middle years and old age.
