th state of the 50 United States of America. The name is taken from the Sierra Nevada mountain range; nevada is Spanish for "snow covered". Nevada is nicknamed The Silver State. The state is named for its many silver mines.

History of Nevada
On Oct. 31, 1864, Nevada became the 36
th state of the Union with Carson City as its capital. In 1950, the Atomic Energy Commission opened a nuclear testing center north of Las Vegas. During the late 1900s, tourism remained the largest industry in Nevada. Las Vegas alone attracted more than 15 million tourists a year. Reno also built large casinos and ski resorts were built at Lake Tahoe. Recently, Nevada's government has worked on several other problems. More money was given to education and laws have been passed to decrease crime and pollution. Nevada has also improved both the airports in Las Vegas and Reno.
On a cobalt blue background in the upper left quarter is a five-pointed silver star between two sprays of sagebrush crossed to form a half wreath; across the top of the wreath is a golden scroll with the words, in black letters, "Battle Born." The name "Nevada" is beneath the star in gold letters. The current Nevada State Flag design was adopted March 26, 1929, and revised in 1991.
