Hello, thank you for contacting Movers.com with your question regarding the deposit for your long distance move.

Most legitimate moving companies will not ask for a deposit upfront before moving your stuff. This can be a sign of a moving scam and the movers will take your money and disappear. Usually they will give you a price estimate before the move and require full payment upon delivery.  If you really want to hire this company, make sure to do in-depth research before you give them any money.

Do a background check.
There are several websites you can use to check the validity of a moving company. The two main sites are the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Motor Carrier Administration where you can search by name or US DOT number.

Read reviews.
Check out other people's experiences with the moving company before you book them. Read the reviews here on Movers.com, the company's website or review sites like Yelp. Make sure that you can tell which reviews are real and which reviews are fake.

Make sure to get quotes from multiple movers before making your final decision. You may find a better company that won't ask you for a deposit.

Thank you again for your question and good luck with your move!
