Moving Container FAQs

What is a moving container?

Moving containers sometimes referred to as storage containers, are portable storage containers meant to help you move. They are great for not only moving, but many companies offer storage solutions with these moving containers.

Most moving containers are weatherproof, so they can be stored for long periods either in your driveway or in a facility.

What we love about moving containers is they are delivered to you directly. First, your moving container is dropped off for you to pack your belongings. Once you are all packed, you call for the pick-up of your container. They will then deliver your container to your new home, whether it's local or long-distance.

Who are some good moving container companies?

With so many moving companies out there, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the choices you have. Here are our top 5 moving companies:

  1. U-Pack - They have both containers and trailers to fit any need you have, and they are available in all 50 states
  2. Pods – They offer 3 different container sizes, and are available in Canada, the UK, and Australia
  3. U-Box from U-Haul – You can drive this container yourself (if you want) and are available at all U-Hauls across the country
  4. Zippy Shell – They are very flexible with your delivery, and are available in 30 states
  5. 1-800-Pack-Rat – They service most of the US, and you can hold onto the container as long as you need it

Our top pick is U-Pack. They make your move easy, are available in every state, and their prices can’t be beaten.

Where will the container be located once delivered?

The container company will more than likely place your container anywhere you request (ask your driver if you aren’t sure, they are professionals who know how to best place the container). Most containers are meant to be placed in your driveway, or a parking spot if you are in an apartment.

We recommend if your driveway has a slope position your container so that it opens facing the upwards slope.

Can I move the container after it’s delivered?

Once your container is delivered, no, you cannot move it. This is a big reason why it’s important to choose the location where the containers will be placed.

Can I lock the container?

Yes, however, locking the container is very much dependent on the company you go with. You might be supplied with a lock and key, or you might have the option to use your padlock and key. No matter what option there is, you can absolutely protect your belongings in the container, and you are the only one with that key.

Remember, a lock does not guarantee that your items are safe. That is why insurance is important.

Are my things insured?

In most cases, either your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance will cover your items while in transit and while they are stored. Companies will offer their insurance (in some cases) so make sure you research what is crucial to you and your move.

Will the container company help me load my items?

Most of the container companies can contract professional movers for you, and of course, you can check on Movers.com to get accredited and professional movers to help you load and unload your container. Keep in mind, if you go through the container company the movers will be contracted as an add-on service.

How do I load the container?

When your container is dropped off, the driver will instruct you how to best load the container. Keep in mind, the more you pack in the container the less likely it is for your things to get thrown around (you’ll have less space).

Do keep in mind there is a weight limit on all these containers, so be aware of what you are packing.

Moving Containers

Overall, we think using moving containers is a great way to move. You can pack on your schedule, and they are typically delivered within 2 to 3 weeks after they are picked up (for a long-distance move). Do keep in mind, anything you will need immediately when you move in (electronics, mattress, etc.) should come with you so you have access to it.
