Moving insurance is an incredibly important commodity to have when you are moving, to protect both you and your precious belongings from any number of mishaps that may occur throughout the moving process. Unfortunately, you cannot obtain moving insurance for specific items through Movers.com, as we are not a licensed moving insurer. However, there are plenty of options available for you to obtain insurance for your move.

Of course, one of your best options for obtaining moving insurance is through your moving company. Your moving company will most likely offer insurance for your items that will vary in coverage, depending on the company and depending on the type of move you will be doing. Usually, most moving companies' insurance covers about .30 to .60 per pound of your shipment. For most of your belongings, this kind of coverage will most likely suffice, however it wo not be enough to fully cover your large, expensive items like antique furniture, large appliances or big-screen TVs.

For your larger, big-ticket items, you can always opt for moving insurance through third-party insurers who can offer full coverage of your valuable items. When choosing a moving insurance plan that's right for you, consider the following options that are available to customers and what they entail:

  • Basic Carrier Liability: The lowest type of coverage you can purchase, this is typically what moving companies offer their customers, and your items are usually covered at around .30 to .60 per pound.
  • Declared Value Protection: This coverage will replace your items based on the depreciated value of the item. Your shipment is given a dollar amount, and your movers are liable for up to $1.25 times the weight of your shipment. This type of insurance is typically more expensive for the customer.
  • Full Replacement Liability: The best kind of insurance to have when it comes to your most valuable possessions, full replacement liability will cover your items for their full replacement value on the current market. While this is the best coverage to get, it is also the most expensive.
