Thanks for visting Movers.com! Let me see if I can help you with your question about the cheapest way to move a large oriental rug.

DIY?
The cheapest way to move your rug would be to do it yourself, but there are a few reasons why that may not be possible:
  • A 9 x 12 rug is quite large even when rolled up, so you would need a vehicle at least as big as minivan with removable or foldable back seats.
  • You could rent a truck to do it but to New Jersey from Virginia is not a short trip, so it's unlikely you or anyone in your family has the time.
  • If you are worried about the rug getting damaged, it's best to hire professionals.
Small/one-item moves
Hiring a moving company for a one-item move is more common than you think. These items are often too big, fragile or expensive to move any other way. In your case, a rug is not especially difficult to move, but nobody is actually moving and you can't feasibly mail it. Luckily, small moving companies can aid you. Small movers are companies that specialize in moving a small shipment or even just a single item.

Hire the right movers
Fill out our small moves form to get quotes from up to seven companies in your area.  The best way to keep things cheap is to compare as many estimates as possible and choose the one with which you're most comfortable.

If you consider the rug valuable, you may even want to spend a little more on insurance. The cheapest estimate you hear may not be from the best mover, so remember to check our moving company reviews if a price seems too good to be true.
