While some companies may differ in what they may or may not allow being included in a moving shipment, the general rule of thumb to follow for most people is that anything that is illegal or is capable of inflicting harm on the people handling it, is prohibited and cannot be shipped. However, some legal items may also be prohibited too, such as alcohol and chemicals.
Here is a list of the most commonly prohibited items:
- Firearms (assembled or disassembled)
- Alcoholic beverages
- Weapons (knives, swords, bows, etc.)
- Controlled substances (drugs)
- Hazardous materials (explosives, flammable liquids, poisonous substances, combustible materials, infectious substances, hazardous waste, etc.)
The best thing to do, if you have any items in your shipment that are questionable and that you are concerned about, is to call your moving company and inquire directly about whether or not the item is prohibited and what measures you can take to transport the items in question if they are.
