Moving can be tough, not only on you and your movers, but on your house as well. With so many people walking in and out of the house on moving day and moving around big heavy boxes and furniture, there is a good chance that your floors can be damaged or scratched in the process. Luckily, if you want to protect your floors there are a few things that movers will typically put down on the floors during a move to keep them safe.

Of course, what is used during the move largely depends on what type of flooring that you have in your home. If you have wood floors, they are more vulnerable to being scratched or dented by heavy furniture or appliances, so movers will often use floor runners on the areas that are likely to have the highest foot traffic during the move. Floor runners are long strips of area rug that are come in long rolls and can be used in any part of your house where the movers will be frequenting, including on staircases. They're a great way to protect wood floors, as are furniture sliders that can be placed under the legs of your big pieces of furniture to help them glide smoothly across the floor when moving them.

If you have carpets, movers can put down plastic surface mats, or plastic masking, which is a material similar to shrink wrap, and will make sure that no water or dirt gets tracked inside the house and ruins the carpet. If you are going to be moving particularly heavy furniture and appliances, another option is to place plywood down on your floors on top of your carpet or wood, creating a second floor on top of your existing one.
