Avoid At All Costs
We received an initial estimate from Universal to move from DC to NY. The original estimate was for $1,500 for a small two-bedroom house. Great price! So my husband calls them to book our move. All of our items were in a storage unit due to us having to move to NY before securing a home. They ask us how big of a truck we used to move and how big the storage unit was and upped the estimate to $2,200 because our items may have weighed more. Ok, fine. We would get a final price when they weighed the truck after loading. So we send them a deposit and are told they will pick our stuff up at 9am on Sunday the 21st and deliver it to NY the same day. Sunday comes around, they get to our unit early and everything seems like it is going great. All of a sudden the movers tell my husband that our move is no longer direct - they need to go to Philly first but not to worry, they will still deliver our stuff on Sunday because that was what was in the contract and Philly is on the way. What can we say? Our stuff is already on the truck. So we say fine and off they go. 4pm rolls around, 5pm rolls around, and no movers in NY. We try calling them - no answer. We call the office - no answer. We finally get a hold of a manager and she doesn't know where they are. Finally get a call from the movers saying they WON'T deliver same day because "we drove a lot and we are tired." EXCUSE ME? I remind them of the agreement and they say no, we won't come. I call the office, my husband calls the office. The manager says she will call them and figure out what is going on and will call us back. She never calls back. Movers call my husband again around 8pm and say "Sorry, we aren't coming - we'll be there at 11am tomorrow." Turns out, they were still in MD - they never left. Today rolls around, I get a call at 7am to authorize the credit card for payment. I haven't seen a final bill and no one is telling me on the phone how much I owe. My husband calls the office and the manager says that our truck was now overweight so we had to pay more. Again, what can we say, they have our things. I authorize and they said they are already on their way. 11 am comes and goes. No movers. Noon, no movers. 1pm and finally they arrive. They give me the bill and start moving things in. Now, let me say that the other mover that actually did all the work was wonderful. He was fast, efficient, and kind. Moshe, who I perceive to be the supervisor, however was terrible. He calls me sweetie and honey they whole time, barely helps the poor other mover and on top of all of it, sexually harasses me before he leaves. He asked me why we didn't buy a house instead of renting. Annoyed, because it's none of his business, I just say it's expensive. Without batting an eye he says "well, if you were the daughter of a tramp maybe you could afford it." WHAT!?!?!?! In what universe is that acceptable? Terrible company with deceptive practices and inappropriate employees. AVOID!

Best experience
I had two main concerns about putting off our move. First of was being able to afford it and second was having it done right because I have antique furniture involved that was passed down to me. So either I was going to sell all the stuff and start over or I had to find a reliable mover that fit my budget. Universal movers and storage hit the mark on both counts and David and the crews were simply awesome, hardworking people. Thanks a billion to them for the service!

Very understanding
Universal Movers made my first time experience using professional movers easy and stress free. David explained accurately the options available for this move and the most cost effective option for this move. The movers moved all of the required pieces and extra last minute furniture items efficiently and within the original time estimate. They were very patient and understanding as we kept adding items/furniture and boxes for them to move. I am very pleased with Scott and Mario and I highly recommend to others. They were very friendly, fast, professional, and efficient as items were packed and transported without any damage

Great for a Local Move
I loved the fact that there was a military discount. We also received a flat rate per hour which included all packing materials. The crew arrived on time and really worked hard. They allowed us to pack the easy and fragile items while they concentrated on the heavier and more difficult pieces. There was a minimum of 3 guys and they were able to complete the move of a four bedroom/basement home to a three bedroom apartment in one day. I slept well in my own bed that night. I loved the fact that while they put together furniture and moved around heavy pieces I was able to put clothes in closets, set up bathrooms and start unpacking the kitchen. It made the next day less overwhelming. I would highly recommend them for a Local Move.

A disappointing move
They should've told me earlier that glass items should be wrapped in a particular way and kept in a box. They refused to take them if not done that way. Certain pieces of furniture had to be done in a certain way. The move was done by three little guys. A couple of pieces of furniture were missing. I would never use them again as I was not satisfied with their services.

Highly Recommended
We had a fairly complicated move because we had stuff in multiple locations and needed them to put some stuff into temporaty storage. Jacob came on-site to see everything, and was incredibly responsive to follow-up phone calls and worked late into the night to come up with an agreeable and accurate quote. He was very up-front and honest, and quite informative as to the whole process. He also provided some good logistical suggestions given that our move was complicated. Once the actual began, the crew (including Jacob) was very courteous and extremely cautious so as not to damage the items or the home. Despite bad weather, they made every effort to keep the premises clean. Universal stuck to their word about a firm price and the costs did not grow even though the actual job began having some tasks that were out-of-scope. They worked incredibly long hours to handle the multiple locations in he Maryland area. I highly recommend Universal for any move. They are honest, accurate, timely, communicative, efficient, and most importantly, careful.
