Losing the freedom of life on Independence Day due to drunk driving is an insanely ironic twist for thousands of Americans each year. According to the 2008 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 25-year study, July 4 is the deadliest holiday for drunk driving accidents among all other annual anniversaries including Labor and Memorial Day, New Year's Eve, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

However, with a little wisdom offered here and good personal judgment on the Fourth of July, chances are high you and your loved ones will remain safe and sound this season.

Enjoying the Birthday Party

It is America's birthday and there is definite cause to celebrate. Even good old George Washington would suggest washing down that delicious hotdog or hamburger with a beer. But don't let the aforementioned approval fool you. Read it twice to become clear on the fact that it says one beer. Toasting to 237 years of independence since the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence is your right as an American, almost a duty if you will; however, having one beer opposed to a six pack is literally a life-altering difference.

Sleeping Over

To avoid any life or death circumstances during the annual celebration, the best move anyone attending a party can make would be to stay put for the night if possible. By staying in one vicinity during the summer holiday, you avoid any alcohol related accidents. Remember you do not have to have even one sip of liquor to end up in a fatal drunk driving disaster. Simply being on the road with others who are intoxicated makes you subject to severe and deadly consequences.

Eat and Drink Slow if You Cannot Sleep Over

If you are not in a position to party all night and sleep over, then drink responsibly. To do so, all you need to do is to make sure you eat foods high in protein like that delicious grilled cheeseburger you've been eying or a couple handfuls of those pistachios sitting on the picnic table. Foods high in protein like meat and nuts help absorb alcohol into the system quicker. Also, drink responsibly just as it sounds. Do not participate in any chugging contests that involve drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. Ideally, having one beverage, beer or glass of wine, an hour with food will keep your BAC level low and legal.

For example if you arrive at a party at 7 p.m., allow yourself two drinks for the evening having one at 7p.m. and one at 8 p.m., and then drink water until 10 p.m. Then and only then can you leave the party. After eating with your drinks in a two hour period and waiting another hour while drinking water, you will reduce your BAC significantly, making it safe for you to drive home with the only collision possible that evening is you crashing into bed for a good night's sleep.

Be Prepared for Checkpoints

When you decide to drive home after a Fourth of July, whether you have been drinking or not, be prepared to stop at Driving Under the Influence, DUI, checkpoints. Towns all across America will have heightened patrol with officers stationed throughout several areas of the city stopping motorists to see if they are intoxicated.

In most states, the BAC, Blood Alcohol Content, of any individual must be below 0.08 percent for them to be considered legal. The side effects of alcohol under 0.08 percent include, but are not limited to, impaired concentration, depth perception, peripheral vision and glare recovery. Side effects of alcohol over the 0.08 percent include, but are not limited to, delayed reaction time, gross motor control functioning, severe motor impairment, loss of consciousness and even death if the BAC reaches higher than 0.50 percent.

If you are driving home on the holiday and notice a surrounding driver acting out of control, with their car swaying in and out of lines or speeding up and slowing down erratically, immediately pull off to the side of the road and gain as much distance as you can from the vehicle. Then immediately call 911 and report the location of the car to authorities in an effort to save the driver from becoming involved in an accident that could severely injure them or even kill another.
