If you are looking to install a new door onto your home, you could always purchase a prefabricated one. However, these cookie-cutter doors might be a little boring for your taste. Instead of buying a premade door, you can always have a door custom built according to your preferences.
Where to Get a Custom Door
Many large home improvement stores offer custom-built doors. Just give the store closest to you a call to see if custom doors are available at that particular one. Additionally, you can search online to find a number of companies that specialize only in creating customer doors. These companies will often have a wider selection of materials and more options than the larger home improvement chain stores.
Your Options
Finding a place to get your custom door is just the first of many decisions you'll have to make. The point of buying a custom door is to let you make all the decisions about how it should look. Thus, you will have the freedom to pick out exactly what your door will be made of and how it will look. For instance, you'll have to decide on the following areas:
- Type of wood - Each species of tree has different coloring and grain patterns. Some types may be more expensive than others, so consider your budget and your personal style when choosing which type of wood you want your door to be.
- Architectural style - There are many different architectural styles of homes, such as colonial, modern, Victorian, etc. There is a style of door to match each of these home types. So, you can design a door that fits in with the style of your home or, if you so decide, go out on a limb and mix and match architectural styles. The choice is up to you!
- Glass options - You may decide that your door isn't complete with a window or other glass work. If you do want some type of glass on your door, you'll have to decide between regular clear glass, stained glass, textured glass, and some other options.
TIP: Some custom door manufacturers allow for customers to design the door themselves. If you are artistically and architecturally inclined, you may be able to design the entire door yourself.
Once you have decided made all the above decisions, you can select the finishing touches that will add to the uniqueness of you custom-built door. You can choose whether you want standard molding around the doorframe or more decorative molding. You'll also want to decide on other fixtures, like doorknobs, peepholes, and mail slots.
With all of the options available to you, there is an almost unlimited number of possibilities for you new door. Whether you want a simple design, or something that stands out a little more, the choice is completely up to you when buying a custom-made door.
