You may not have given much thought to protecting your garage or basement floors, but these areas often take a lot of punishment. There’s a great way to give these surfaces a non-slip coating that will also seal pores and improve their durability: epoxy concrete floor paint. This guide will tell you how to go about applying such a substance to your concrete floors.

Prep Work

The concrete floor you plan to coat with epoxy paint must be completely free of dust, dirt, oil, and other chemicals prior to application. The surface also has to be completely dry. Without a completely clean and dry floor, the epoxy paint won’t adhere as well as it should. If your floor is particularly old and dirty, you might consider resurfacing it prior to applying the epoxy paint.

Next, you’ll need to fill in any cracks in the concrete. There are many methods out there for doing this, so you’ll have to do a little more research into that before you proceed. However, once you’re done with this step, you should be ready to apply the epoxy paint to the floor.

There are different types of epoxy paint for you to choose from, varying in quality and price. For example, solvent-free epoxies are easier to apply than others and can be done so much faster. These also give off less fumes and don’t shrink while being applied. Consider your needs and budget carefully, and, if you just aren’t sure which one to go with, seek the advice of a professional.

When applying the epoxy paint to your floor, wear adequate safety equipment. You should have a high-grade breath mask, work gloves, rubber boots, and safety goggles. Your epoxy manufacturer may offer additional safety guidelines as well. It’s also a good idea to protect your walls from splashes by taping up some plastic sheets.

Use a paintbrush and/or paint roller to apply the epoxy paint. Spread an even coating on the floor and let it dry. You’ll probably want to apply at least a couple of coats to make sure you have a thick and durable layer. When you apply the epoxy paint, be careful not leave brush marks so that you have an even and clean-looking coating. Give the epoxy paint plenty of time to set before you start using the surface again.

With a little time, patience, and good epoxy paint, your concrete floor will not only be durable, but look great too.
