Routines may sound boring, but many people find comfort in them. But what do you do when your routines are all jumbled and out of whack after you move? Establish new ones!

Creating routines in your new town after you move might sound like a difficult project, but don’t worry. You’ll be back to normal in no time with these tips.

Get to know your new town

One of the reasons moving is stressful is because you’re unfamiliar with your new town. To combat disorientation, spend the first days getting to know your new town.

If you were used to dropping off and picking up your dry cleaning on Thursdays, find out where your new dry cleaner is.

If you haven’t already found replacements for service providers from your old town, this is the time to do it. Figure out where the pharmacy is, the library, the post office--anything you know you will need on a regular basis. Before you know it, you’ll have your routes mapped out and know the shortcuts to all your favorite places.

The internet

The internet is often the answer to many problems, and it’s no different here. Use the internet to find new restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores or anything else you might need. You’ll be able to read reviews of those places and get a better lay of the land from there.

TIP: If you’re looking for something specific, for example a bookstore, a quick Google search of “bookstore” along with your new zip code should yield multiple results with a map.

Schedule

Immediately after a move, life is hectic--making it difficult to schedule your time. Once all the dust settles and the smoke clears, organize your schedule to restore some order.

Think of things you’d like to accomplish during the day, week or weekend and make a schedule accordingly. You may find that allotting time for grocery shopping, exercising or doing other errands will make you feel more at ease after your move.

Consider each item an appointment you’d like to keep. You would definitely show up and make time for your doctor’s appointment, so why not for another “appointment” you’ve set?

Make it a home

Settling into your new home will be easier if you bring some of your old home with you. Hopefully you didn’t leave your favorite chair behind. If every night before you go to bed you sit in the same chair and drink a cup of tea while you read a book, then you should continue to do the same thing after you move.
Keeping those smaller, personal routines will help you create and establish new ones in your new home. Whatever small rituals you kept before you moved should be kept after your move. You’ll feel calmer, relaxed and more settled in no time.
