You may have taken every step necessary to protect your home from burglars, but have you thought about your backyard? Your front and back yard are essentially your first line of defense against burglars and break-ins. Combine a few of these tips to make sure that your home's yard and exterior are protected from burglars.

Strong fences

If your front and back yard are completely open, how difficult is it for anyone to just stroll into your yard? Pretty easy, and if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of foot traffic, what's to stop someone from doing just that? Installing a strong fence on your property is an easy way to deter intruders from trying to gain access to your property.

The fences around your home should be tall enough to deter anyone from attempting to climb the fence and strong enough so it will hold up over time. Good options for protective fencing include:
When installing fencing around your home and yards, make sure that he gate is just as secure as the fence itself. There should be no areas to stick a hand through that can reach the locking mechanism. Yes, it might be easier for you to get to your backyard, but it will also be easier for a burglar to do the same thing.

Lighting

Darkness is a burglar's best ally. Making sure your backyard is properly lit will help deter burglars. Consider installing motion sensor lights which are not only helpful in preventing you from fumbling around in the dark when taking the garbage out, but will automatically come on as soon as anyone walks within the sensor.

Motion sensor lights are especially useful in areas that have heavy foliage and should be directed to cover sidewalks leading to any door in the area. You can also install them over patios, decks or outdoor stairways. Motion sensor lights are easy and relatively inexpensive to install but are an excellent deterrent.

Landscaping

Keeping your shrubs, trees and bushes neat and pruned will help eliminate hiding places for any burglars and intruders. If you have tall trees, consider keeping the bottom branches trimmed for more visibility.

If you have a lot of windows on your ground floor consider planting thorny bushes in front of those windows to make it even harder for anyone to approach your windows. Just be sure to wear gloves when you're pruning to avoid falling victim to your own thorny bushes!

Outdoor furniture, tools and decorative items

Decorative trellises are lovely to look at and make your home that much more stately, but they can make it easy to access your second-floor access and also provide a make-shift ladder to any teens who like to sneak out at night! If you have any trellises around your home, move them away from your windows or porch roofs so they cannot be climbed.

If you leave your patio furniture out year-round, consider stacking them and securing them away from your home so they also cannot be climbed. If there are any ladders or step stools that you keep in your garden shed, be sure the shed is locked or secure those items inside your home where a burglar cannot gain easy access.

With any combination of the above tips, your home's exterior can easily be more secure which will leave you with peace of mind.
