You may have painted and decorated your bedroom when you first moved in, but when was the last time you changed things up? If your bedroom could use a bit of wallet-friendly updating, try these tips to create the bedroom of your dreams--without spending your life savings.

Add interest above your head

If you don't have a headboard, an easy and inexpensive way to add a decorative touch is to hang art. You can hang up photos, an interesting poster or even some lights to add interest above your head.

Give your bed the royal treatment

If you have a canopy bed, hang inexpensive curtains all the way around the bed to make a bold statement. You can use sheer curtain panels to ensure you still allow plenty of light in, or you can go the extra mile with blackout curtains to make sure you really get a good sleep every night.

Your ceiling could use some love as well

You shouldn't neglect the ceiling in your bedroom. A quick, easy and inexpensive way to update your bedroom is to change up your light fixture in your ceiling. There are plenty of DIY projects for re-purposing lampshades--so why not take a trip to the thrift store, find a lampshade in an interesting shape and recover it?

Get some new sheets

OK, sheets can be expensive. But maybe you can add a few decorative throw pillows -- perhaps with sparkles if you're into glam? If you use a duvet (or even if you don't) add color with a new duvet cover. Everyone's favorite Swedish furniture store has plenty of designs and patterns to choose from that won't break the bank.

DIY headboard

If you have the time and energy, why not try to build your own headboard? There are plenty of plans online to create a custom headboard out of nearly anything you can think of. Spend an afternoon at the home improvement store to get your supplies, and then come home and build a rustic headboard. Not into the hard wood? You can make a headboard with a large piece of cardboard -- cut the cardboard in a shape you love, wrap it in batting, cover it in fabric and add buttons to create a tufted look.

Update your window treatments

Maybe all your bedroom needs is a new window treatment. Visit your favorite department store and scope out their curtains when you have a chance. Most chain stores have plenty of inexpensive options for you to change the look of your windows in a flash.

TIP: If nothing is catching your eye in the window treatment aisle, mosey on over to the bed sheets. If you have some basic sewing skills, you can turn a flat sheet into a pair of curtains.

Now that you've got some ideas to get you started, there's no reason not to try them in your own bedroom.
