How to Pack a Bed Canopy

Unattached the fabric canopies

A canopy bed is a four-poster bed where it's canopy can be made from a wide variety of materials and might not be attached to the bed frame at all. For example, mosquito nets and fabric hanging from the ceiling are also considered bed canopies. For these types of canopies carefully detach the hanging fabric or net from the ceiling and fold it neatly before placing it into a box.

Remove any decorative elements and bedding

Many people who own four poster beds, will decorate them by draping with fabrics, flowers, or other decorative elements. If your canopy have decorative items, before you begin to pack a bed canopy, make sure you remove all decorative items and bedding and store them safely.

Disassemble the bed canopy frame

Once your bed canopy is cleared of any decorative items, you can begin disassembling the bed frame. Here are some materials you'll need to remove the bed canopy frame:

  • A step ladder
  • A screwdriver
  • A rubber mallet (optional)

Once you got all the materials, you can start disassembling the bed frame by following these steps:

  • Step up on the ladder until you can see the top of the first corner you'll be working on.
  • If your canopy bed has decorative knobs at the top of each post, they can often be easily removed by just unscrewing them with your hand. Remember, righty-tighty, lefty-loosey!
  • Once the knob is removed from the first corner, you should be able to lift it off and remove the side of the canopy.

    TIP: You may need someone to support the hanging portion of the canopy rail so it doesn't bend or get damaged while you remove the knob on the opposite side.

  • If your bed has decorative knobs, unscrew all four so you can remove the canopy rails. Then replace the decorative knobs.
  • Wrap the canopy rails in bubble wrap or packing paper to prevent any damage and store them safely.

While wooden canopy beds usually have decorative knobs that are easily unscrewed and removed. For a metal bed frame will likely need to use a screwdriver to take it apart.

  • Starting with the same steps as above, begin at your first corner and start unscrewing the canopy rails one at a time while a helper holds the rails in place for support.
  • If any joints are too difficult to separate, use the rubber mallet and gently but firmly tap the canopy rails to loosen the joints.

Pack the bed canopy frame for moving

Once the canopy rails are separated, you can pack bed canopy rails simply by wrapping them in bubble wrap or packing paper. Make sure to tie them together for safe keeping. To pack bed canopy frame, use moving blankets. You can also use moving pads to wrap the bed frames for additional protection.

Once the entire bed canopy is dismantled and securely packed, lay all the wrapped pieces flat onto the moving truck so that packing materials remain intact during transit.
