Without an automotive battery we would literally get nowhere when we attempted to turn on our vehicle. The rechargeable device, often referred to as a starting-light-ignition (SLI) since it starts, lights and ignites the starter, supplies electric power to our vehicle. Since the automotive battery is most often made of toxic fluids and electrical compartments, it can cause damage to the other items, so it is important you transport the automotive battery with care when you move.

Pack and Transport a Car Battery

Here's how to safely pack and transport a car battery during your move so that it does not let fluids and cause danger or damage to the other items.

Wrapping

With many heavy metals and toxic chemicals inside a car battery, it is very important to both wrap and box it properly before placing it in a truck or car with other items. So, it is best to wrap a battery in a thick cloth to avoid leaks during transit. Using an old towel would be the safest and most reliable, however, an old sheet would do as well.

Simply place the battery in the middle of the towel or sheet and fold the sides of the cloth up and around the battery, completely covering it on all sides.

Once it is totally covered, duct tape and secure the material over the battery. Wrap duct tape on all four sides as if you were putting a ribbon on a present. This way the material is sure to be cover the battery and readily absorb any chemicals that may leak from it during the transport.

Boxing

After packing the car battery in cloth, place it in a box slightly larger than the object itself. Make sure to place battery on its bottom and not to place it upside down. Once the battery is inside the box, take newspaper and pack it tightly around all sides, securing the device in place so it does not get tossed around during transport.

Now tape the top of the box, completely enclosing the battery inside. Make sure to label the box both "Fragile" and "Handle with care" so the box is handled carefully during the move.

Transporting

Once the battery is both wrapped and boxed, you can now place it in either a truck or in your own vehicle. No matter where or what vehicle you place battery, assure you put it in a secure spot, so it stays in place. Try to keep the boxed battery away from other items in the case the lead acid seeps through the covering and box and onto adjacent materials that could cause damage.

Disposing

If you are not comfortable traveling with an automotive battery, you can recycle it and purchase a new one upon arrival. New car batteries can be found at many commercial automotive stores.

But before you go buying a new battery, properly dispose of your old car battery first. If you simply throw a battery in the garbage curbside, you are risking both soil contamination and water pollution by haphazardly having it placed in a landfill. With many recycling posts in all towns and Call2Recycle available, you can responsibly rid yourself of your old battery, so you do not have to travel with it.
