Whether you're an expert Golfer or just play as a hobby, you've probably invested a good amount of money in your own set of golf clubs. And like any other expensive item you own, you would want to protect it during a move. Since golf club bags are not particularly light or compact, packing and moving them isn't necessarily as straight forward as it may initially seem.

Packing Golf Clubs

Here are some tips and tricks on how to safely pack and move your golf clubs.

Choose your travel method

How you pack up your clubs will vary slightly based on your mode of travel. Are you shipping your clubs? Putting them on a moving truck? Flying to your new destination and taking them with you?

The safest and most secure way to pack and transport your golf clubs is to pack them as if you were shipping them via freight carrier (such as UPS or FedEx). If you opt to use one of these shipping companies, they often offer a service to professionally pack your clubs for you.

Tips for packing golf clubs

If you are packing the golf clubs yourself, here are some things you need to know:

  • A travel golf bag - Golf bags are essential since they allow you to keep all your balls and golf accessories in one place. These bags come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. If you are traveling with your golf clubs (whichever mode of transportation you're using), it is best to invest in a bag that is as light as possible. This is especially true if you're flying with them since airlines will charge you for overweight luggage that is more than 50 pounds.
  • Custom shipping box (15 x 15 x 48)/Individual tube boxes (for shipping single drivers or clubs) - If you have a small travel bag, you can slide the bag straight down into a custom shipping box made for golf clubs. Different carriers provide different types of such boxes, but they are generally made to fit an entire set of clubs. If you are shipping individual clubs separately, most carriers will provide tube boxes specialized to fit each club.
  • Bubble wrap - Whether it's your driver, an iron, or your putter, use bubble wrap secured with packing tape to safely pad each club head. For added protection, you could wrap a towel around the entire set. You can also group similar clubs together with all the shafts in a single section of your bag. If you're packing without a golf bag, in addition to wrapping the heads in bubble wrap, you should also bundle the clubs together and use bubble wrap all the way up and down the length of the shaft, then secure with packing tape.
  • Packing tape - You don't want to go crazy with the packing tape, but you do want to be sure you've used enough so that the rest of your packing materials are securely fastened to each part of your golf clubs. Make sure you have enough tape to seal your packing boxes with at least two layers of tape before shipping or loading them onto a moving truck.

TIP: If you're traveling with your golf clubs as a carry-on or checking it onto a commercial airline, you most likely won't need a cardboard packing box in addition to your travel case; however, a hard case is recommended for air travel to reduce the risk of damage due to jostling.

Additional packing tips

  • After padding your clubs, protect them further in your golf bag by covering them with a rain cover. This will prevent any unsightly scratches.
  • If there's any extra space inside your golf bag or packing box, stuff the box and golf bag with old newspaper or packing paper for added cushioning to avoid any jostling in transit.
  • You can add a stiff arm to your travel bag for extra support and protection for your club. Either purchase it or use a DIY method. Many golfers use broomsticks, hockey sticks, dowels, or PVC piping to add extra support.
  • Consider getting your golf clubs insured prior to your move. Whichever method you choose to ship your clubs, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Ask your carrier for more details on insurance options.
