Ties are often made of delicate materials like silk, making them susceptible to creases or other damage if not packed properly. To avoid this, follow the advice outlined below, which will give you a couple of different tips on how to pack ties.

What you'll need to pack ties

For packing ties, you should have the following supplies:

  • Small to medium box or a wardrobe box
  • Large sheets of brown packing paper
  • Roll of packing tape
  • Permanent marker

Steps to Pack your Ties for Moving

There are two ways to pack ties: on or off a tie rack. If you want to pack them off the rack, they need to be rolled rather than folded.

Follow these steps to pack your ties off the rack:

  • Place the skinny end of the tie in the palm of your hand, letting the rest of the length of the tie fall over the back of your hand.
  • Roll the tie tightly around your hand, though not too tight.
  • Then, you can place the rolled-up tie on its side in a small box (a shoe box could be a good fit).

Another option is to pack your tie rack with your ties still on it. Before you start, though, make sure you remove the batteries from the rack if it's automatic. Otherwise, it could try to spin while in transit, possibly damaging it and killing the batteries.

In many cases, you can just hang your tie rack from the bar in a wardrobe box. Then, all you have to do is fill up the remaining space in the box with clothes, tape it shut, label it, and send it off.

Some tie racks, however, won't fit onto the bar of the wardrobe box. But, if you still want to pack the ties and rack together, you can create a custom box to fit them.

Here's a step by step guide for packing ties while they are on the rack:

  • First, lay out the large sheets of brown packing paper on a bed or other surface. You need enough paper to completely wrap the tie rack, along with the ties, without folding them.
  • Place the rack and ties in the middle of the paper. They should all be lying neatly.
  • Wrap the ties and rack like you would wrap a gift, using packing tape to secure the paper. Be careful not to fold or wrinkle the ties.
  • Now lay out a flat piece of cardboard big enough to completely encase the ties and rack. Cut a small or medium box to the size you need.
  • Lay the wrapped ties and rack on one side of the unfolded box and then fold the other side of the box over them.
  • Wrap packing tape all the way around the top and bottom of the box to seal it closed. You should end up with a sturdy package that will keep your ties from bending.
  • Your custom tie box can be packed inside another box along with other belongings.

After you have wrapped your ties on/off the rack, use the marker to label the box with contents and destinations. Make sure that it is handled with care while moving.
