So you've made the decision to move your one-bedroom apartment by yourself. Since you don't have too much stuff to move, you'll be able to handle it without a problem. However, you still have to rent a moving truck--and figuring out what size you'll need isn't as easy as it seems. Read on to determine what size truck will best suit your move.

What kind of items will you be moving?

Begin by assessing your belongings. The size of the truck you rent is dependent on what you need to put in it, so here are some questions to consider when evaluating your moving load:
  • Am I moving any large furniture? Items like couches, sofas, futons, mattresses, dining room tables, dressers, desks, armoires and bed frames all require a lot of space to be loaded properly. How many of these items you'll be moving will determine how big of a truck you require.

  • Am I moving any large appliances? Refrigerators, washing machines and dryers or large electronics like big-screen TVs, will demand a good deal of truck real estate and must be packed and wrapped thoroughly to prevent damage. The more of these items you have, the bigger the truck you'll have to rent.

  • How many boxes am I transporting? While this is a tough question to answer before you begin the packing process, use a rough approximation to judge how much space you'll need to reserve for moving boxes. A typical one-bedroom apartment can have anywhere from two to four rooms, so you'll need somewhere between 25 to 40 boxes for your belongings. Some people have more belongings than others, so the number of boxes you'll need will depend on what you'll be packing.

Contacting a truck rental company

With your moving inventory ready, contact a local truck rental company to inquire about prices and determine what size truck would best fit your move.
  • Provide the company with a description of your belongings or your moving inventory. When you speak with the truck rental company, you should have a copy of your moving inventory available. While you may not be able to accurately estimate how much space you'll need for your belongings, moving truck professionals will have more experience to help you determine what size truck you'll need.

  • Inquire about proper loading techniques. The best way to maximize space in your moving truck is to load it properly and make sure you've used every square inch of space. If this is your first move, you may not be as experienced in the truck-loading department. Moving truck professionals know the right methods for packing and loading a moving truck to help you devise the most efficient strategy possible.

How big of a truck will you need?

On average, relocating the contents of a one-bedroom apartment will require you to rent either a 10-foot or 14-foot moving truck. These are the two smallest sizes available from most truck rental companies and will typically contain enough space for your belongings.
  • The 10-foot truck is a small box truck with 402 cubic feet of space inside, and is commonly used for studio apartments, dorm rooms and one-bedroom apartments.

  • The 14-foot variation features increased capacity and almost double the volume, with 733 cubic feet of space. These larger trucks are used for larger one-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom apartments -- perfect for those who are moving large furniture and appliances and need the extra space that the 10-foot truck does not offer.
If you are having trouble deciding which size you need, remember to always err on the side of caution and rent the bigger size--it's better to have more space than renting a truck that's too small.
