Will the truck rentals charge us for not filling the tank? Can you please let me know how to avoid being charged for fuel when returning?

Yes. U-Haul and most other moving truck rental companies require you to return the truck with the same fuel level it had when you picked it up. If you return it with less fuel, you'll typically be charged for the missing fuel and may also pay a refueling service fee.

If the truck was provided with a full tank, you should generally return it with a full tank. If it was provided with a partial tank, return it at the same fuel level shown on your rental agreement.

Rental Truck Fuel Policy

Situation What Happens
Return with the same fuel level No additional fuel charges
Return with less fuel Charged for the missing fuel, plus possible refueling service fees
Return with more fuel Typically no refund for the extra fuel

Tips to Avoid Fuel Charges

  • Check the fuel gauge before leaving the pickup location.
  • Keep your fuel receipt in case there's a question about the fuel level.
  • Refill the truck shortly before returning it.
  • Return the truck with the fuel gauge at or slightly above the level shown on your rental agreement.

Fuel policies and refueling charges may vary by company and rental location, so always review your rental agreement before returning the truck.

Avoid overfilling the tank if your rental agreement requires only a partial fuel level, as most rental companies do not refund extra fuel.
