Wrap each wooden shelf individually before moving it. Moving blankets, furniture pads, or packing paper can protect the wood from scratches, dents, and rubbing, while extra padding around corners and finished edges helps protect vulnerable areas.
How to Pack Wooden Shelves for Moving
- Remove the shelves. Take removable shelves out of each bookcase instead of transporting them while installed.
- Keep the hardware together. Place shelf pins, screws, and other hardware in a labeled bag so you know which bookcase they belong to.
- Wrap each shelf individually. Cover each shelf with a moving blanket, furniture pad, or packing paper. Add extra padding around corners and finished edges, and don't let finished wood surfaces rub directly against each other.
- Secure the protection. Use packing tape, stretch wrap, or bands around the protective material. Don't apply packing tape directly to finished wood, because adhesive can leave residue or potentially affect the finish.
- Label the shelves. Mark the wrapped shelves by bookcase or room to make reassembly easier.
- Secure them during transport. Place the wrapped shelves where they won't slide, fall, or have heavy items stacked on them. Make sure they're properly supported and secured inside the moving truck.
If you're moving the bookcases too, remove any loose shelves first and protect the bookcase frames with furniture pads or moving blankets before loading.
What If the Shelves Are Going Into Storage?
Make sure the shelves are clean and completely dry before wrapping them.
For long-term storage, avoid wrapping wood in a way that can trap moisture against the surface.
