Although the days of carrying around a large stereo on your shoulder while you walk down the street are over, stereos have continued to get smaller and lighter. Now, the average stereo can weigh anywhere from 10-30 pounds, depending on the size of it. Of course, there are many different types of stereos that range from small wireless ones that you can fit in the pocket of your jeans, to large home stereo systems that are considerably heavier.
Preparing to move your stereo
- Organize all wires and cords and tie them together to avoid tangling. Before you pack your stereo, unplug all wires from any outlets and neatly arrange them, tying them together with string, zip ties or rubber bands and secure them to the stereo with a piece of tape to avoid any wires from becoming tangled during the move.
- If possible, pack the stereo in its original box. The best box to pack your stereo in is the original box that it came in. This box was designed specifically to hold your stereo and keep it protected, so it's the best box for you to pack it in for a move -- that is, if you still have it. If you do not, you can try contacting the manufacturer to see if they will provide you with another one.
- If you do not have the original box, you may also use a special electronics box. You can obtain these electronics boxes from our moving supplies page or contact a local moving company who may be able to supply these boxes for you.
Moving and loading your stereo
- Load your stereo onto the moving truck carefully. When loading your stereo, be sure to place it in a safe place on the truck and not stacked beneath heavy boxes that can damage the stereo. Place it against the back wall of the truck or against one of the sides to keep it stable and secure during the move.
- Make sure to clearly label the box. Before loading your stereo, make sure to clearly mark the box that it's in so the movers know that there is potentially fragile electronic equipment in the box and to not place it underneath anything heavy.
