A treadmill is an excellent tool to help you stay in shape, however the machine is only for cardio conditioning and won't help you build any upper body strength -- which is what you'll need if you want to move a treadmill. A typical treadmill will weigh anywhere between 175-250 pounds although the actual weight will largely depend on the size and type of the treadmill you are moving.

Fortunately, newer treadmills are being manufactured with wheels and easily foldable designs that make them much easier to transport than older models. With newer portable treadmills, all you need to do is fold it up and wheel it wherever you need it to go, whether it's from your bedroom to your basement or loading it onto a moving truck.

Preparing your treadmill for the move

  • Fold the treadmill into an upright position. Taking the bottom portion of the treadmill, fold it up towards the top portion where the console is located and lock it into place until the treadmill is standing upright. In this position, the treadmill will be much easier to transport through doorways.
  • Wrap the treadmill with moving blankets and moving pads. To protect the treadmill during the move and to keep it safe while it's on the truck, wrap the treadmill with at least one layer of moving blankets and moving pads to create a cushion for the equipment. Wrapping the treadmill will also make it easier for you to carry and load on to the moving truck.
  • Unplug the treadmill and disconnect all wires. Before moving the treadmill, make sure that it is completely unplugged from all power sources and that you have disconnected all wires and cords and have secured them to the equipment with packing tape. If you can remove the cords and pack them separately, do so.

Moving your treadmill

  • Use the proper moving equipment to load the treadmill onto the truck. Like all large, heavy appliances, you should have the help of multiple people when moving the treadmill. If the treadmill has wheels, you should be able to easily roll it out of the house and onto the moving truck. However, if it doesn't have wheels, you'll need some extra help. If you have access to a handtruck or dolly, you should use it in order to help you safely transport the treadmill onto the moving truck.
  • Hire professional movers to lend a hand. Large, heavy items like treadmills are difficult to move on your own, which is why it's always a smart idea to hire professional movers and packers to handle it for you.
