Ask a neighbor if they could use the item. Otherwise, many charitable organizations will offer a pick up service. The Salvation Army allows you to schedule a pick-up online!
If you want to make sure that you are donating to a legitimate charity, the Internal Revenue Service maintains a database of all organizations registered as charities. You can also check with your state's charity regulator by going to http://www.nasconet.org/ and locate the exact individual responsible for policing charities.
