I have a lot of fine china that I’m scared to pack. I don’t want it to break during the move because it’s so expensive and it’s a family heirloom that has been passed down for many generations. How can I best protect these extremely delicate items when I pack?

Packing your delicate items safely and correctly is one of the most important parts of the packing process. When it comes to packing china, make sure to layer each dish with a piece of packing paper in between. Wrap the paper around the dish all the way, and make sure to place the dishes in a dish carton, which is a sturdy box designed especially for delicate dishes. Pack the china on top of crumpled up pieces of packing paper, which will provide cushioning for the china in the boxes.

For glassware and crystal stemware, roll each piece in two or three sheets of packing paper, tucking in the excess paper into the open parts of the glassware to provide extra support for the glass. Layer the bottom of a dish carton with crumpled up packing paper to provide some cushioning and then place a group of dividers, or cells, inside the box so you can keep each glass separated and prevent them from coming in contact with each other during the move. Then, place each glass into its individual cell with the rim facing down, to utilize the glass's natural strength point and make it less likely to break.

Make sure to label each box accurately and clearly mark them as fragile so that movers will be aware of which boxes contain your delicate china, glass and crystal items and they move them with care and make sure not to stack heavy boxes on top of them in the moving truck. Also make sure that the boxes are taped correctly and are tightly secured so that the contents inside are not jostling around during the move.
