Packing up all of your belongings during a move is a daunting task, and sometimes you may not even know where to start. First, take a deep breath. A good way to get started in the process of figuring out what packing materials you will need, is to first know exactly how much stuff you actually have.

You can use our moving estimate weight calculator to get an idea of how much the most common household items weigh and cost to move, but you will still need to figure out just how many boxes you need, and what size.

Just how many boxes will I need?

For a three bedroom house, you will typically need a box count that looks something like this:

  • 25-30 medium boxes
  • 15-25 large boxes
  • 10-12 extra large boxes
  • 2-5 bulky/oddly shaped boxes
  • 8-10 wardrobe boxes (if needed)

Your total amount of boxes, depending on how many items you plan on packing and the sizes of boxes you choose, could be somewhere between 75-90 boxes. Don’t forget about box sealing tape, a tape dispenser, permanent markers, and labels.
