The first step to determining how many movers will be assigned to your move is to get quotes from local moving companies. You'll also need to classify what type of move you're making, and then follow up with at least three estimates from potential moving companies.

If you're making a local move (100 miles or less) and are moving from a standard residence (small house or small to medium sized ground floor apartment), you will most likely need between two and four movers.Typically, two movers can get the job done as long as you don’t have any items exceeding 250 lbs, and a minimal amount of boxes and furniture. If you have a lot of heavy items, you may need three movers. Rates for two movers are per hour, and can start anywhere from $85-$170 per hour.

Things to keep in mind for local moves:

  • Movers will charge you for the packing materials they use
  • You may have to pay extra for stair carries or long carries
  • If the company cannot park in front of your house, you may be subject to a shuttle service fee

Long distance moves can be a little more intricate in terms of hiring movers. Companies charge by weight, not by hour. This will also determine how many movers will be needed to pack and load the truck on moving day, and how many will be needed once the goods reach the new residence (Generally, between two and four movers).

Things to keep in mind for long distance moves:

  • Companies charge by weight and amount of goods they pack, so mark all boxes PBO, or “Packed By Owner” if you pack them yourself
  • Make sure you tell your movers where you want your furniture placed when you get to the new location
  • Always look into extra insurance policies for your goods, since weight doesn't always equal the actual value of your goods. Sometimes homeowner’s insurance will cover you so you don't have to spend the extra money on insurance
