Desk weights can vary tremendously depending on what your desk is used for. Some people have very simple drafting tables or desks made of composite materials, which are much lighter and easily portable. They usually do not have drawers, or if they do, only one or two small ones. These types of desks can be anywhere from 50-100 pounds.

An average office style desk, however, that comes with file cabinet drawers or matching hutch, can be between 115-200 pounds.

Tips for packing your desk

The way you pack your desk will depend greatly on what type of desk you own. If you have a glass top desk, you will want to remove the top and provide optimal protection when packing the glass.

No matter what material your desk is made out of, you’ll want to educate yourself on the proper packing materials and procedure for most furniture.

If your desk has removable drawers, you will want to remove and pack them separately to reduce the weight of the desk. You can fill the drawers with non-breakable items before loading them onto your moving truck. If your desk has stationary drawers, you will want to take extra care in taping them shut so they do not fly out during transit and get scratched.
