Moving a dresser -- especially a large, heavy one -- may seem like a difficult task to accomplish, but it does not have to be. But before we address the proper methods for packing and moving a dresser, I'll get to answering the question. Your average dresser will usually weigh anywhere between 100-150 pounds, of course this depends on several factors though, such as how large the dresser is and what materials it's made from.

Because of the size and weight of a typical dresser, you'll need multiple people to help you out with moving this large piece of furniture. Whether you choose to handle it yourself or whether you plan on hiring movers to lend you a hand with the move, there are a few things you should do beforehand to prepare the dresser and its contents.

Preparing the dresser for the move

  • Remove all clothes from the drawers. The first thing you should do before you move your dresser is go through each drawer and remove all clothes and other contents from the drawers so that they are completely empty and ready to be moved. Moving a heavy dresser is already hard enough as it is, but trying to move it when it's completely full of clothes and other things sliding around in the drawers is near impossible. Pack your clothes and wardrobe away separately before you begin prepping the dresser for the move.
  • Secure all of the drawers of the dresser and close them tight before moving. Try to move a dresser without securing all of the drawers shut and you will spend a lot of time dodging drawers that slide open and closed with every tilt of the dresser. Close all of the drawers before your move and secure them shut with rope or a safe tape that wo not damage the furniture.
  • Protect the dresser prior to the move. Wrap the dresser in moving blankets or towels to help cushion it during the move and prevent damage when it's placed on the truck.
Moving the dresser
  • Use a dolly or hand truck to move the dresser. You'll need some help if you're going to be moving the dresser by yourself, so it's best to place the dresser on a dolly or hand truck to remove it from your home and load it onto the moving truck in the easiest way possible.
  • Make sure you have people to assist you. As mentioned before, moving a large piece of furniture is a job for more than one person, so recruit some help from neighbors, friends or family members to help you with moving the dresser.
