Mattresses are one of the most difficult household items to move because of one simple fact: they do not come apart, they ca not be reduced to a smaller size or broken down into several pieces -- there's just one large mattress that you have to move and load onto the truck. On average, a mattress will weigh between 100-150 pounds, depending on whether it's a single mattress, a double, a queen size or king size.

To move a mattress, you can either wrap it in moving blankets or other protective wrap and move it as is, or you can pack it, but either method requires some preparation in advance.

Preparing to move your mattress

  • Pack and wrap your mattress carefully. After removing all of the bedding from your mattress, including the sheets, comforters and any other layers of bedding, separate the mattress from the box spring and wrap it carefully with moving blankets and moving pads. Or, if you have acquired mattress cartons, you may pack the mattress carefully into the carton once you've assembled it. Mattress cartons are special cardboard boxes designed for packing mattresses.
  • Disassemble the headboard and box spring and pack those separately. You'll need to take apart your headboard, box spring and the legs of the bed after you've removed the mattress. Keep any screws, bolts or nuts in a plastic bag and secure them to the headboard with packing tape so you do not lose them.

Moving your mattress

  • Lift and carry the mattress, do not slide it. Although it may be easier to move the mattress by sliding it along the floor, this can damage the mattress material. Instead, have at least one person on either end hold the mattress and lift it off the floor when you carry it.
  • Hire professional movers to lend a hand. Large, heavy items like mattresses are difficult to move on your own, which is why it's always a smart idea to hire professional movers and packers to handle it for you.
