So you've decided that shipping your goods in boxes to yournew state is the best option for you. Maybe you've reduced most of your belongings to clothes and smaller household items, and just want to have your packages waiting for you when you get to your new location.

How to pack your stuff

When purchasing your packing boxes, have a general idea of what you'd like to pack together and how much space the items take up, because you'll need a box at least three to four inches bigger than that to pack the proper padding. For packages up to 10 pounds, you can use paperboard boxes, but anything heavier than that will require corrugated cardboard or metal reinforced paperboard. You can also use wood and plastic boxes for all load sizes.

For padding inside the boxes, you’ll want to purchase packing peanuts, bubble wrap and/or newspaper packing to wrap your belongings. Make sure that there is little to no movement inside the box before you seal it, and properly mark the box “fragile” if need be.

Shipping your packages

There are plenty of ways to ship your packages, via USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc. Your decision should be based on reliability of the carrier, speed of shipping and cost. Keep in mind that expedited and overnight shipping can cost $60 for small parcels, so unless you really need your boxes there tomorrow (or a few days with express), opt for a more economical option that will typically take two weeks. Check back to our guide on shipping options for more information. You should be aware of the things you cannot ship, too.
