Generally, your rug should be a foot wider than your couch on all sides. If you're using an area rug in your living room, make sure that you get one that fits your couch, chairs, as well as any tables you might have.
You can also position the rug where only the legs of your furniture are on the rug. To do this, place the front legs of the couch on the rug, the coffee table in the middle, and any chairs you might have along the edges of the rug facing the coffee table.
