Though you have hired movers to get the job done, there are many things you need to do before they arrive.

Box up everything

Some moving companies will offer packing services for you for an extra price. So, to save some money, you can pack and box up some important household items. The more you pack, the lesser things will be for your movers, and there is less chance that any of your stuff will get broken during the move. While packing your items, make sure you have strong, sturdy boxes; don't overpack items, this can damage the box, and ensure that all your boxes are sealed properly and clearly labeled.

Prepare your home

Some basic precautions are required while moving. You need to remove the unwanted items and unplug all the electronics. You need to take the proper care of your belongings to make sure that all of your fragile items are safe and secure while in transit. Also keep in mind, if you're moving in the winter, make sure to salt your driveway, sidewalks, and all walkways leading to and from your home.

Create an inventory

Make a list of all the items you are about to move. It will be very useful when packing your stuff and will serve as proof of the contents if something gets damaged or missed.

Clean and organize

Make sure all the items that are going to move are organized and in good condition. You don’t want damaged devices and furniture pieces to come in contact with other delicate items and ruin them. Make sure to remove the batteries from the devices that will be transported in the moving truck; Empty drawers, bookshelves, and cupboards. Disassemble the furniture and pack the bedding separately.

Pre-pack small items and put labels

Keep all the small things in a sealed bag, so that they don’t get lost during transportation. Don’t forget to put labels, color-codes, and give specific instructions to the items that you need to be handled with care.

Keep the important stuff with you

Keep all of your personal documents, and valuables like jewelry, artwork, and other fragile items with you. Movers are not liable for the things that you have packed and moved.

Measure doors and carefully move your large furniture items

Measure the doors and see if your larger furniture will fit through the narrow corridors and steep staircases. Make sure the path is clear of any obstacles and safe. If you have bulky furniture to move, you can detach it into pieces and wrap them in blankets for extra protection. If you don’t know how to disassemble the parts, you can hire movers to do the job.

Secure your personal data and take photos of your belongings

Keep your credit cards and bank information securely locked. Protect your computer with a password. And take photos of your belongings while disassembling, packing, and moving. This will really help you in unpacking things easily.

Finally, things like packing ahead, organizing the items, preparing everything for your home will help the relocation go much faster and easier.
