After a move, you're likely buried under a mountain of moving boxes and packing paper. Boxes are easily broken down and recycled after you're settled in, but throwing away all that packing paper and newsprint can seem like a waste.

how to reuse packing paper after your move

Instead of hauling all the paper to the recycling bin, try one (or a few) of these tips to reuse newsprint and packing paper after you move.

1. Clean windows

Instead of paper towels, try using unprinted packing paper to clean your windows and other glass surfaces. Paper towels and regular towels can leave lint behind... who wants that on their windows?

2. Plant starters

When you're planning your garden for the spring or summer, start your seeds indoors first. To do this with newsprint, make newspaper pots, which you can plant directly into the soil once they've sprouted. All it takes is some strategic folding to create a bowl shape for the potting soil and seedlings.

3. Save your sagging boots

If gardening isn't your thing, you can use wadded up pieces of newspaper or packing paper to stuff inside your shoes while they're in the closet to help them keep their shape. You can also use this method to keep hats and purses in top shape.

4. Dry those shoes

If you happened to step into the only puddle on your way home after a rain storm, put a few pieces of loosely wadded up packing paper inside the shoes to absorb the moisture and prevent mildew and odors.

5. Weed barriers

Back in the garden, you can use newsprint as a simple weed barrier. Just lay down a single layer of newsprint in the bottom of your container garden or raised garden bed before adding your layer of soil. It will help keep weeds at bay while allowing your flowers and vegetables to flourish!

6. Clean up broken glass

This is similar to the idea of picking up small shards of glass with a slice of bread. Moisten a piece of newspaper and use it like a sponge in the area with broken glass. The moist paper will pick up even the tiniest shards of glass, and then you can just throw out the entire thing once you're done.

7. Ripen tomatoes

If you have a few green tomatoes from your garden, wrap them in a newspaper and store them in a cool, dry place. They'll turn red and ready to eat in no time.

8. Prevent ice on your windshield

If you're expecting a snow storm and you park outside during the winter, lay some paper on your windshield. In the morning or after the storm, lift off the paper and remove the snow in one fell swoop.

9. Care packages

If you're looking for some quick and easy cushioning for a care package -- stop right now. You've already got it around your house. Grab a few sheets of the packing paper and crumple it up into the empty spaces of the box you're using to send out your goodies to a friend in need.

10. Pet potty training

Puppies are cute, but they need to be potty trained. Like many toddlers, they have bathroom accidents around the house. If your new puppy is marking his or her territory in the same spot, lay down a few sheets of the leftover packing paper or newspaper to protect your floors.
