Is your kitchen in need of a makeover? Renovations can be expensive, drawn-out, and disruptive to your daily routine. Save money and time and revitalize your kitchen decor with these simple DIY projects!

Make decorative magnets out of jewelry

Have a bunch of elaborate, sparkly vintage brooches lying untouched on your jewelry box? Re-purpose these trinkets as decorative magnets to jazz up your refrigerator door.

Simply remove the pin from the back of the brooch using pliers, and attach a magnet with a hot glue gun. Flowers, animals, jewel-encrusted baubles--the possibilities for your magnet-making are endless. You can even create holiday-themed magnets out of festive Christmas, Halloween, Easter or Thanksgiving brooches.

Paint wooden utensils

Dress up your cooking by adding a little color to your wooden spoons set. Use painter’s tape to keep the lines clean and paint the handles bright, eye-catching colors to match your kitchen’s color scheme. Go from light to dark in the same shade for an ombre effect, or go for varying bold shades that complement your decor. If you have a wooden cutting board, add a little flair by painting the edges.

Create custom coffee mugs with marker

Ever search high and low for a coffee mug with a specific design, only to come up empty-handed?

Luckily, it’s easy to customize your coffee mugs to feature or theme you like! Use a glass paint maker to adorn your mug with pictures, patterns, names, or sayings for any occasion. Make holiday mugs, make personalized mugs as gifts—the possibilities are endless! If you want to make the mug dishwasher-safe, allow to dry for four hours, and simply place inside the oven while cold, set to 375 degrees, and leave inside for 40 minutes.

Wallpaper your fridge

Sick of your dull white fridge? Turn this often unsightly appliance into a focal point of your kitchen with temporary wall paper. Similar to contact paper, temporary wallpaper is easy to apply and comes off easily as well. It is often available in fun, vibrant colors and prints, perfect for dressing up your refrigerator.

Stencil your appliances

Decorate your microwave, fridge, electric stand mixer, or even your toaster with colored wall vinyl and a pretty stencil. Use the stencil to trace a design of your choice on a piece of wall vinyl in a bright, fun color, and cut it out carefully with an Xacto knife. Peel away the backing and adhere your design to the surface of your appliance.

Make Mason jar soap dispensers

Add vintage flair to your kitchen (or bathroom) with charming Mason jar soap dispensers.

  • Empty your bottle of soap into a temporary container and make a hole in the Mason jar lid (using a screw driver and hammer) the same circumference as the opening of the soap dispenser.
  • Unscrew the dispenser's lid and cut off the top just below the threads.
  • Glue the top of the soap bottle to the Mason jar lid and screw the pump on (trim the bottom if the pump is too long).
  • Fill the jar with your favorite soap and you're all set! (You can also spray paint the Mason jar lid if you wish to match your kitchen's decor).

Add cabinet space

Have a lack of cabinet space in your kitchen? Use a window tension rod to double your space. Insert the rod midway through your cabinet to create a second shelf for small items like spice containers, baking ingredients (vanilla extract, sprinkles) and other small items.

Make tea tin fridge magnets

These magnets do double duty--they are both functional and decorative. If you have a collection of vintage tea, spice, or candy tins collecting dust in your basement, transform them into chic fridge magnets. No glue required--simply slip a strong magnet inside the can and stick to your fridge. Fill the tins with pens, pencils, or paper for scribbling important notes and reminders.
