Once you've got the basic system in place, organizing your child's room is an easy feat. Your child can keep his or her own room organized using these same steps, but first you have to give him the tools he needs to get started. Using these tips, organizing your child's room will be a breeze.

Identify your needs

The first step to any organizing project is to identify your needs. Creating more storage is almost always the answer to organization problems. However, putting a storage or organizational system in place is only effective if it's simple and impossible NOT to use. Whether it's a playroom or bedroom, you need to figure out what the room is being used for and what to do with the inevitable clutter clusters that will accumulate.

Organizing a child's playroom

If you have an area in your home designated for your child's playthings, you'll have to gather up the toys if you want to be able to walk around.

  • Trying to find a way to wrangle stuffed animals, plastic trucks and puzzle pieces can be difficult, especially if you have too much of it. One of the first things you should do is pare down as much stuff as you can before you start organizing. If you still have infant toys when she's eight years old, it's safe to say they can be tossed.
  • When organizing your child's room get on her level. Look at the room from her vantage point. She needs to be able to reach any baskets, drawers or hangers you'll be using.
  • Open baskets and bins on the floor can be useful when corralling toys of different shapes, sizes and types. A small shelf for books is an easy way to get her to read more and stay organized. If she can see all her books neatly she'll be able to choose the one she wants to read today.
  • Furniture that can act as double duty is also a simple way to make sure your kid's room stays organized. A chair or bench with built in storage keeps smaller toys and games out of sight if you need a quick way to store them when company's coming.

Organizing a child's bedroom

Children's bedrooms should be comfortable, warm and inviting so they can get a restful night's sleep to prepare them for the next day. A cluttered mess is distracting and with a combination of toys and clothes on the floor, it could even be unsafe for bathroom trips at night.

  • Just as you would with any other room, identify your needs in the room. He may need a reading area or a small play area for his toys. His closet may need to be re-organized. There are many needs in a child's bedroom that should be considered.
  • Double duty furniture is of course an option and highly recommended. You get twice the usage of an item with only one piece of furniture taking up floor space.
  • Remember to keep things at his level.
  • If you're going to be reorganizing his closet, invest in child hangers. Adult hangers will stretch out children's clothes and possibly damage them.
  • Whichever storage system you decide to use for your child's bedroom, be sure that it's something easy for him to maintain and teach him how you want him to keep it up.

Make it a game

Make organization into a game or a learning experience. If you utilize different color bins or baskets to hold toys and laundry, separating the piles is great for skill-building.

No matter what, your child's room will inevitably become messy again, but implementing a system that's simple enough for him or her to use could end up saving you hours of arguing and temper tantrums down the road.
