There are a few different kinds of destination charges and fees related to moving, and each of them serve different functions and are connected to different kinds of moves. The destination charges that you will likely have to pay, if you are asked to pay any at all, will depend on what kind of move you will be making.

For instance, if you are making an international move using an international moving company or overseas shipping company, you may have to pay destination charges when your shipment goes through Customs. These charges are the same whether you ship your goods on a freighter using a shipping company or whether you place them in the trunk of your car and drive across the border, and your goods are usually subject to these charges based on what kind of items you are shipping.

For the most part, household goods and personal effects are allowed to pass through Customs without significant taxes or fees being levied upon them, however different countries have very different regulations regarding what can be shipped into the country, so it's best to check with your country's local Consulate or Embassy to get the definitive details on any special restrictions or charges you may have to pay when shipping your household goods there.

Another type of destination fee you may have to pay is a fee for the destination agent who will be awaiting the arrival of your shipment in the destination country and will provide assistance to the customer in regards to the shipment, and is usually based on port regulations and port charges, as well as usage of the storage warehouse to store your shipment container and the transportation of your container to storage. This website also contains a list of countries and what the destination agent fees are in those respective countries upon the arrival of your goods.
