What special care is needed to move a piano from a downstairs rec room (10 steps)? Can it be added to someone elses larger load coming to BC? Thanks

Hi and thank you for visiting Topmoving.ca! You ask a very good question, and I will be happy to answer it for you.

Special Movers/PianoMovers

You can find movers in your area that are called “special movers,” and are considered experts in moving items like pianos, boats, artwork, antiques, motorcycles – the list goes on. Typically, these types of services have very focused methods for packing and moving your fragile items, and they are usually well worth the money you would be putting out to have this type of service.

How your piano is moved depends on whether you have a grand piano or an upright piano. For a grand piano, the lid is removed and packaged with cardboard, pads and moving blankets. The lyre will then be removed and packaged similarly to the lid, followed by loading the body of the piano onto a skid board.

For an upright piano, it is moved as one piece, and therefore will need to be heavily protected with proper packaging such as cardboard, pads and moving blankets. For more information about piano movers, go here.

Consolidated Shipping

While you may be able to find a moving service that will add your piano as part of a larger load, this generally is not recommended and many special moving services will not do this, since they want to take extra care that your piano or special item arrives just as you had it before you move. If you consolidate, you run the risk of having your piano intermingled with other household goods that could potentially shift during transit, making your piano vulnerable to potential damage. However, that is not to say that this will happen, and you can certainly voice any concerns or questions about your piano and other fragile items in transit when discussing your estimate with a potential full service moving company. Be sure to be as thorough as possible so the moving company can better advise you on how to handle moving your piano. You can find moving companies here at Topmoving.ca, and compare free quotes from these companies.

Good luck with your move!
